Where the name Kuakata comes from
"Kua" means well. In the late 18th century, Rakhine people who came from Arakan (Myanmar) dug wells on the coast for drinking water, and the area took its name from them. An old well still stands at the entrance of Keranipara, a Rakhine village.
How to get to Kuakata from Dhaka
By bus
Direct buses to Kuakata leave from Sayedabad, Abdullahpur, Arambagh and Gabtali in Dhaka. Since the Padma Bridge (2022) and the Payra Bridge at Lebukhali (2021) opened, there are no ferry crossings on the way.
- Travel time: usually 6–7 hours; holidays, toll plazas or traffic can make it longer.
- Fares: an August 2025 report put non-AC buses at Tk 750–900 and AC buses at Tk 1,100–1,600. Fares change, so check at the counter before you buy.
